Garden Tour
Urban Garden Tour
This year we combine small and larger town gardens, with
two new ones for you to view. There is something for everyone,
from small courtyard to secluded private gardens with lots
of surprises. Morning and afternoon teas are included on
this half day tour.
Jacqui's Garden ~Jacqui Kensington
A very old beech tree welcomes you to this colourful spring,
cottage garden. Trellising, archways and a Delta Hut abound
with climbing roses and other climbing treasures to see.
The raised vegetable garden is a work of art and with many
ideas to take home
Le Petit Jardin ~Petra Donath & Murray de Lacey
Part of the garden sits in the front of a turn of the century
bungalow and is dominated by mature trees, low lonicera
hedging, ornamental grasses and New Zealand Native plants.
The paved driveway, flanked by standard iceberg roses
and lavender, leads you to the rear part of the garden.
You find yourself in a completely sheltered and enclosed
courtyard garden dominated by raised vegetable, salad and
herb beds. Clipped lavender and buxus mop top robinia,
and a collection of terracotta pots filled with buxus clipped
into various topiary shapes.
The Garden of Stuart McFarlane
The garden was first planted about 15 years ago originally
in a cottage style. In 2000 the front garden was changed
to a more formal style with hedging of lonicera and buxus.
The garden beds are planted with a variety of roses, rhododendrons,
hostas and perennials, showcasing what can be achieved
in a small site.
The Garden of John and Margaret Collett
This garden is situated on nearly half acre with beautiful specimen
trees including a massive weeping elm, swamp cypress, totara
and maples which are underplanted with foliage dominant
plants such as hellebores, hostas, Chatham Island forget-me-not
and clivias which give a cool green theme. Shrubs that
thrive in the shade include rhododendrons and camellias.
A relaxing water feature edged with stones is surrounded
by ligularias, rodgersia, gunnera and more hostas.
The Garden of Barb and Albie Mason
Take the meandering path past recently replanted gardens,
through the gate to secluded gardens beyond. View the red
and green garden with water feature, the summer house built
to reflect the 1930's home, vegetable garden and pond.
There is a children's play area complete with tree house
in a massive feijoa tree that produces in excess of 90kgs
of fruit a year.
